SUMMARY:JFHOD 2025

SUMMARY:Inserm Symposium on Microbiota
DESCRIPTION:The Inserm Cross-Cutting Program on Microbiota will come to an end in 2024. For this occasion\, a final symposium will be held on October 28th and 29th 2024 at the Université Paris Cité. This scientific meeting will be an opportunity to present the work carried out during the program and to highlight the role of the microbiota in health. You will find here all the information concerning the symposium\, as well as the registration and poster abstract submission forms. \nThe registration for the symposium is free but mandatory before September 15th 2024. \nOver the last 20 years\, a growing body of research has explored the complexity of microbial communities living in symbiosis with their hosts and their importance for health. In particular\, it has shed light on the gut microbiota showing how the many beneficial effects of the symbiosis established between humans and their gut bacteria have been compromised over the last 50 years by environmental and dietary changes associated with industrialisation. Importantly\, alterations in the gut ecosystem are now considered to be a major contributor to the global “epidemic” of chronic inflammatory and metabolic diseases. \nTo better understand the role of the microbiota in human health and pathology\, Inserm launched in 2017 a dedicated multidisciplinary program gathering twenty scientific teams. This program has focused on finding causal links between changes in the microbiota and disease\, in particular by studying the metabolic pathways affected by changes in the microbiota and by studying the gut ecosystem. \nThis final symposium provides the opportunity to present the work carried out during the program and leap into the future with the “Food Systems\, Microbiomes and Health Research Program” (PEPR SAMS)\, funded as part of the France 2030 investment plan\, that is taking over to support a national effort in this area of research. \nhttps://pro.inserm.fr/evenements/inserm-symposium-on-microbiota

SUMMARY:Symposium Institut Cochin "Why sex matters ... in health and disease"
DESCRIPTION:Institut Cochin is organizing its annual international symposium on Friday\, November 17\, 2023. The symposium will discuss new concepts and the most recent findings regarding the impact of sex as a biological variable on various aspects of pathophysiology. \nMany recent works demonstrate that biological sex – or whether it is female or male – as well as the number of sex chromosomes carried by an individual\, can have a profound impact on various aspects of biology\, in homeostasis and in many diseases. The influence of biological sex is still poorly understood and too often ignored both in basic research practices and by the medical profession. The French High Council for Equality between Women and Men noted\, in its 2020 report\, the importance of taking sex and gender into account to provide better care\, as a public health issue. \nThe Institut Cochin symposium “Why sex matters … in health and disease” will highlight the impact of sex on gene regulation\, cancer\, immunology and metabolism. In these areas\, both the physiological mechanisms involved and the development of chronic diseases such as cancer\, autoimmune diseases\, diabetes\, chronic liver diseases will be addressed. \n\nRegistration – Deadline October 31\, 2023\n\nRegistration fees (tax included): \n\nNon academics: 160\,00 €\nAcademic labs other than Institut Cochin: 80\,00 €\nAcademics Institut Cochin (except students): 40\,00 €\nStudents in labs other than Institut Cochin: 30\,00 €\nInstitut Cochin students\, organizers: free

SUMMARY:Cell Symposia: Infection biology in the age of the microbiome
DESCRIPTION:Cell Symposia: Infection biology in the age of the microbiome\nClassical studies of microbiology neglected the roles of resident communities\, within which most pathogens function\, creating simpler models for studying infection. Traditionally\, this area of research has been separate from studies of so-called good bugs. Yet recently\, a microbial community view of pathogenesis has taken shape: one in which molecules\, machinery\, and mechanisms that were discovered studying bacterial infection are now being applied to understand the interplay between pathogens\, resident microbes\, and the host environment. The integration of next-generation sequencing\, metabolomics\, and genome-engineering techniques has expanded the horizons of infection biology\, enabling the interrogation of increasingly complex systems. \nThe meeting will explore bacterial pathogens and pathogenesis from multiple perspectives\, from cellular mechanisms to interbacterial interactions and community behavior\, as well as pathogenesis in the complex milieu of the microbiota. The meeting will also highlight the pathogenic potential of the microbiome and explore microbiota-based and engineered antibacterial/therapeutic approaches. \nOur topics will include: \n\nBacterial communication and signaling\nInterbacterial and interkingdom interactions\nPathogen interactions with hosts and microbiomes\nCommensal homeostasis and dysbiosis\nMicrobiome-based opportunities for therapy\n\nThis innovative program will unite pathogenesis stalwarts with microbiome pioneers to share their collective knowledge—spanning molecules\, microbes\, and communities — to envision the future of infection biology research and therapeutic intervention.
